    This easy baked breakfast dish is loaded with chewy oats, chunks of apples and, and spiced with cinnamon.

    It's perfect for those chilly mornings when you need more than just a hot cup of coffee to warm you up, and any other time of the year too! Not to mention, the house smells amazing while it's in the oven.

    Different Types of Oatmeal?

    If it is your first time eating steel cut oatmeal, it might take a little time to get used to the coarser texture of steel cut oats, but the addition of baked apples and cinnamon will surely win you over. (Plus a little maple syrup and brown sugar doesn't hurt, either.) 

    What makes steel cut oats different than other oats such as rolled, quick, or instant is how they are cut/prepared before being packaged.

    Types of oats

    Rolled Oats: The whole grains are steamed and pressed flat with steel rollers. The rolling process shortens the cooking time.

    Quick and instant: The oats are cooked and dried before they are cut and rolled then to make the cooking process even quicker than that of rolled or steel cut oats.

    Steel cut: These oats aren't rolled. Instead, steel blades slice them into coarse nubs, giving them an appearance like cut-up grains of rice. Steel-cut oats are less processed than rolled oats. They take longer to cook than rolled oats, and their texture is a bit chewier.

    • apples
    • milk
    • brown sugar
    • cinnamon

    Instructions

    If you're someone who loves having oatmeal every day, you'll love this baked oatmeal because you can make a big batch at once and have a ready to go breakfast in minutes every morning.

    Just a few simple steps are all it takes to create this delicious breakfast treat! 

    1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and grease a 9 x 13 pan.
    2. Melt butter in a skillet and add oats.
    3. Stir until lightly toasted. I toast the oats on the stove in this recipe before I bake them, and I highly recommend this step. Why? This little bit of effort truly enhances the flavors and add more depth to the already hearty steel cut oats.
    4. Place oats in a large mixing bowl and pour boiling water over them.
    5. Add apples, cinnamon, brown sugar and salt and stir until combined.
    6. Add milk and stir.
    7. Pour into prepared dish and bake until browned and set.
    8. Stir oatmeal before serving and then add toppings as desired. 

    PRO TIP: Reheating the oatmeal? Add a little milk to regain the creamy texture. Serve with brown sugar and maple syrup, of course!

    FAQs

    Can I make this with another fruit?

    Yes, you can! Feel free to swap in another fruit, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries are all great choices! Keep in mind that you will need about 3 cups of fruit for this recipe.

    Do I have to toast the steel cut oats?

    You don't have to do this step, but I highly recommend it. The nutty flavor of the oatmeal really shines through with the toasted oats.

    Best way to reheat oatmeal

    We use the microwave to reheat individual portions all week long. Just be sure to add a little milk when you are reheating to prevent the oatmeal from drying out.

    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 2 cups Steel Cut Oats
    • 4 cups boiling water
    • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
    • 3 apples peeled and diced
    • ¼ cup brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 2 ½ cups milk
    • Brown sugar maple syrup, fruit, nuts (optional toppings)

    Instructions
     

    • Preheat oven to 375 degrees and grease a 9 x 13 pan.
    • Melt butter in skillet and add oats. Stir until lightly toasted.
    • Put oats in a large mixing bowl and pour boiling water over them.
    • Add apples, cinnamon, brown sugar and salt and stir until combined.

    • Stir oatmeal before serving and then add toppings as desired.

      Cooking right now! Needs an extra 10 mins or so to fully set, but it smells wonderful! I didn't have just plain cinnamon, so I used apple pie spice. I'll comment again once I've tried it.

        Hi Penny, I would start looking at the oatmeal at about 35 minutes and then bake it until it is set in the center. Happy eating!

        I have never tried this exact recipe with regular rolled oats. It might be easier to use this recipe https://www.garnishwithlemon.com/blueberry-baked-oatmeal/ and substitute the blueberries for apples and cinnamon. Good luck!

        I usually use Granny Smith apples, but any kind will do. It's an oldie, but goodie!
