Ingredients & Substitutions
A few ingredient notes:
Eggs: Large eggs were used to test this recipe.
Half & half: My favorite for a rich flavor. You can also use whole milk or heavy cream.
All-purpose flour: Helps create a crispy exterior.
Croissant bread: Day-old bread makes the best french toast. Day-old brioche bread will give you a similar flavor. If your bread is fresh, let it sit on the counter for a few hours to dry out.
Instructions
French toast takes just minutes to make!
Make the Custard: In a large casserole dish, whisk together eggs, half and half, flour, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. It’s okay if the flour doesn’t fully dissolve.
Soak the Bread: Dip bread slices into the custard for about 30 seconds per side.
Cook the French Toast: Lightly butter the griddle and place soaked bread on it. Cook for a few minutes until golden brown, then flip and cook the other side. Transfer cooked pieces of toast to a sheet pan in a warm oven while you finish cooking the rest of the bread.
Tips for the Best Croissant Bread French Toast
✘ Use Day-Old Bread: Fresh bread gets too soggy. Let slices sit out for a few hours to dry.
✘ Don’t Oversoak: A quick dip prevents sogginess.
✘ Use Medium Heat: Ensures a crispy outside while keeping the inside light and airy.
✘ Let It Rest Before Serving: Pop your finished french toast pieces in a warm oven while baking off the others. This helps the toast firm up.
