Why You'll Love this Layered Greek Dip
- Always a crowd-favorite: Bright, bold Mediterranean flavors everyone loves. The briny olives, juicy cucumbers, salty feta and garlicky hummus remind me of my favorite Greek salad.
- No cooking required: If you can spread, chop and dump, you can make this dip. Seriously.
- Make-ahead magic: Assemble hours (or even the night!) before guests arrive.
- Our cream cheese update that works: We switched to whipped cream cheese after hearing from you that the old layer could get too firm when refrigerated - and wow, what a game changer. Stays soft, creamy, and perfectly scoopable straight from the fridge.
- Perfect for potlucks: Travels well, serves a crowd, and always disappears fast. Add this to your go-to list for BBQs, tailgates, and holiday spreads.
Ingredients & Substitutions
Our Greek dip has - you guessed it - SEVEN layers of goodness made from the Mediterranean-inspired ingredients.

- Whipped cream cheese: A lighter, scoopable layer that stays soft even when cold (reader-approved!). You can buy it whipped or whip your own.
- Fresh lemon + garlic: Brightness that makes this Greek dip irresistible.
- Hummus: Your flavorful base layer. I used a plain hummus in this recipe, but feel free to add your favorite flavored hummus instead.
- Grape tomatoes: The little salad tomatoes are my go-to because I almost always have them on hand. Regular tomatoes work equally well but just be sure to remove as much of the seeds as possible to avoid a watery layer.
- Cucumber, Kalamata olives, green onions: The real Mediterranean vibe.
- Crumbled feta: Because Greek food isn't Greek without feta. And here's a little secret - block feta is usually vacuum packed in brine which keeps it a bit more milky and moist. That little bit of brine also seasons the cheese and imparts extra flavor. Bonus: block feta cheese is usually less expensive than a similar amount of pre-crumbled feta. But hey, no shame in the pre-crumbled game!
- Italian seasoning: This might raise eyebrows in a Greek dip, but trust us, it brings together familiar Mediterranean herbs like oregano, basil, and thyme that pair beautifully with the other flavors. If you prefer, you can use dried oregano or a Greek seasoning blend instead.
How to Make Layered Greek Dip
If you can spread, chop and dump, consider yourself an expert Layered Greek Dip maker.

Mix the cream cheese
Stir together the cream cheese, lemon juice, garlic and Italian seasoning in a bowl until smooth.

Build the base
Spread the cream cheese onto the bottom of a serving dish. Top with a layer of hummus.

Layer
Top with remaining ingredients: cucumber, tomatoes, olives, feta cheese and green onions.
Best friend tip: Most 7-layer dips are made in a shallow glass casserole dish so you can easily see the layers. You can definitely do that with this recipe, but I like to go another route. I build this dip pyramid-style on a serving platter - wider base, narrower peak. You can still see each layer individually, but building it this way gives the whole thing a little more wow factor. Again, no right or wrong here. Purely an aesthetic choice.
Serving Suggestions
While tortilla chips are the go-to dipper for traditional 7-layer dip, this Mediterranean version demands pitas. Pita chips are a natural match, but warm, toasted pita wedges? Chef's kiss.
If you have extra time on your hands, feel free to toast fresh pita bread wedges to dunk in this dip. Short on time? Tear open a bag of pita chips from the store.

Make-Ahead Tips & Storage Tips
This Greek dip is a dream on prep day. Even with all the layers and fresh veggies, you can definitely make this dip ahead of time.
Make it fully assembled up to 12 hours ahead. Or prep everything separately (chop veggies, whip cream cheese, crumble feta), then layer right before guests arrive. Either way works very well!
Leftovers? In the rare event you have leftovers (seriously, it always disappears around here), I have two suggestions:
- Mix a few scoops of the dip with chopped romaine lettuce for a Greek-inspired salad. Top with additional cucumbers, tomatoes and/or olives.
- Stir together the leftover dip and spoon it into tortillas. Roll them up, refrigerate for 30 minutes and then slice into pinwheels.
FAQs
The lemon and herb-flavored cream cheese adds substance and creaminess to this dip. You can easily swap in light whipped cream cheese for the full fat variety with no issues.
I've also seen other recipes that use whole milk Greek yogurt or tzatziki sauce in place of the cream cheese, but I haven't tried that substitution. My gut says it might be a bit runny to be made on a platter or serving plate, but this swap might work just fine in a shallow casserole dish. If you try it, please let me know!
You can whip regular cream cheese with a splash of milk until light and fluffy. Works like a charm. Just make sure your cream cheese is softened to room temperature first, or you'll end up with a lumpy mess
Great question! While it's labeled "Italian," this seasoning mix includes herbs that are common across the Mediterranean, like oregano, thyme, and basil, which all complement the Greek flavors beautifully. If you have Greek seasoning on hand, that's a great substitute, too.

Could you use goat cheese instead of the cream cheese
Hi Julie, I've never subbed goat cheese for the cream cheese, but it sounds like a great idea. Please let us know your thoughts if you give it a try!
