It’s no secret that we love our cocktails here at Garnish with Lemon, and tequila is at the top of the list. Let us introduce you to our new summer sipper: Blueberry Margaritas.
When it comes to margaritas, I tend to stick with the classics like this straight-from-Mexico golden margarita. If I’m in the mood for something with a bit of a kick. I’ll break out the Texas Margarita.
But these Blueberry Margaritas might just trump all the others. Those fresh berries and the hint of mint are a refreshing twist when paired with the classic margarita ingredients of tequila and lime juice.
The ingredient list is short and sweet but please use fresh fruit, it does make a difference. The fresh blueberries give the drink its gorgeous color. How can you turn that down??

Is a Blueberry Margarita super sweet?
The vibrant color fools you into thinking that the drink is super sweet and syrupy, but this cocktail is the perfect balance of tequila, fresh blueberries, lime and mint.
And possibly the best margarita I’ve had in a long time. Which is saying something for this classic-on-the-rocks-with-salt kind of gal.
Best Tequila for Margaritas
Not sure which tequila to choose for your margarita? Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Blanco (or silver) tequila – This clear, unaged tequila mixes well with nearly any ingredient and is the most common of all types of tequila. We think it’s the best choice for most margaritas. You’ll find it in several of our citrusy drinks, including this blood orange margarita recipe and this spicy grapefruit margarita recipe.
- Reposado tequila – This tequila is “rested” for up to one year. It takes on an amber hue after aging in wood barrels and has stronger flavors of oak and vanilla. Reposado can work well in margaritas – like this Golden Margarita – but you’ll also find it in mixed drinks with heavier alcohols.
- Añejo tequila – After one year, a reposado tequila becomes an añejo tequila. It’s aged for up to three years in barrels and develops more color and a deeper flavor. It’s definitely more of a sipping liquor, so you’ll most often see it in sipping cocktails like this Tequila Old Fashioned or even by itself on the rocks.
Bar tools needed to make this cocktail
You don’t need a fully stocked bar to make these drinks, but we do recommend a few key tools to pull them together:
- A muddler is an essential tool for every home bar and is absolutely necessary to make this drink. It releases the oils from the mint and the juice from the berries.
- A good cocktail shaker will strain the solids from the juice and the mint letting that gorgeous color shine through. And who doesn’t love a pretty drink?

Best Glasses for Margaritas
You can serve a marg in whatever glass you choose. We love to use low ball glasses because they are easier to drink out of and we can throw them in the dishwasher.
But if you want to pull out those margarita glasses you have stashed in the cabinet, no judgement here, do what makes you happy.
Just be sure that whatever glass you serve it in, you rim it with salt. That’s not optional in my book. Margs must have salt!
How to rim your glass with margarita salt
A salted rim is such a simple garnish but adds a major flavor boost to this drink:
- Our favorite salt is probably right in your pantry. We think that inexpensive kosher salt is the best choice. It has just the right-sized crystals and a crisp, clean flavor that works well with margaritas.
- Pour a small amount of salt onto a small plate and pat it into an even layer.
- Cut a lime wedge and gently run it around the rims of your glasses.
- Dip the juice-rimmed edges of the glasses in the salt, rotating glasses to make sure the entire rim is covered.
Not everyone chooses to drink alcohol, but that doesn’t mean that can’t partake in fun drinks. It’s easy to turn these blueberry margaritas into virgin margaritas. Simply omit the tequila and add some club soda or flavored seltzer water.
Blueberries are plentiful at the store right now and this would be the perfect summer cocktail to add to your bartending collection.

- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 cups fresh blueberries, divided
- 20 mint leaves
- 1 1/2 cups silver tequila
- 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
- 2 tablespoons kosher salt
- Lime wedges for salting rim
- 8 toothpicks
- Mint for garnish, if desired
- Combine water and sugar in a small sauce pan. Heat until sugar is dissolved and set aside to cool.
- Thread 1/2 cup blueberries onto toothpicks to use for garnish. Set aside.
- Place mint leaves and remaining 1 1/2 cups blueberries in a pitcher and muddle to release the juices. Add sugar mixture, tequila and lime juice and stir to combine. Refrigerate until ready to use.
- Place salt on a small plate.Run a lime wedge around rim of glass and dip moistened edge into salt.
- Add ice to glass and strain desired amount of Blueberry Margarita into glass. Garnish with berries and mint leave.
